It hasn't even been a week since we've been back... yet the New Orleans Improv Festival seems like some kind of a fantastical dream.
First off: IT'S NEW ORLEANS!!! Beignets & coffee, muffalatas, poboys, jumbolia, gumbo, etc., etc. Oh did I mention copious amounts of alcohol???
Second: The world's best traveling companions, John, David & Bill.
Third: Really excellent improv. We saw troupes from New Orleans, New York, Dallas, & Austin. Plus... James Adomian came down from L.A. with his dead-on Bush, McCain, and others impersonations, and volumes and volumes of amazing stand up. To give you an idea how strong the improv was, on Saturday night, during a performance of improvised Shakespeare consisting of "O, Vengeance" from NOLA and our own Bill Chott, some drunk dude in the front row yells, "REHEARSED". Many of the performances were just that good!!!
Fourth: Workshops!!! I participated in two. First was "The Pattern is Everything", by Chris Trew from Austin. This workshop emphasized the importance of establishing or recognizing "pattern" early, as a means of bring focus to a scene. Second was "It's All In The Body", by Nick Lopez of NOLA. This was a very physical workshop that got us more in our bodies and the space, rather than in our talking heads. I apologize for the brief capsulizations, but maybe we can talk about it more on a Wednesday, or Thursday night at the Improv Trick.
Fifth: Meeting and hanging with improvisational actors from around the country.
Well... that's my time for now... hope to see you soon.
