"Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen."
which is to say
"That of which we cannot speak, thereof one must be silent."
This is the last proposition of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico Philosphicus. I'll resist the urge to try to compress the Tractatus and the body of early 20th century linguistic philosophy into a two line summary, or to talk about how Wittgenstein's philosophy shifts in his later Investigations, and just say that when I'm doing improv this line occasionally pops into my head as a reminder that what we can say is limited.
